Saving Money on Rent - Reducing your Rent

Getting your rent reduced varies depending on individual circumstances, location, financial resources, and of course your landlord. Here are a couple ideas to reduce your rent.

Prepay
If you have the financial resources talk to your landlord about paying quarterly, even semi-annually, for a discount. Ask your parents about helping to finance this. They will be happy you are thinking outside the box to save money.

Cash Discounts
Ask about paying in cash for a discount. It might not be much, but every little bit helps. If your currently paying with a credit or debt card this is a huge savings for property owners.

Trade Services
Find out if you can get reduced rent by helping out with grounds keeping, repairs, office work, etc. Get creative. Accounting student? Offer to do bookkeeping. Graphic designer major? Offer to make brochures or update their web site.

Parking space with no Car?
Find out if you can rent this space out to someone else. Those in metropolitan areas will get the biggest reward.

Extend your Lease
Arrange a longer lease for better rates. An empty apartment for a couple months is a money losers for landlords. This also saves them the time and cost in finding new tenants.

Long-Term Tenant Discount
If you’ve lived in the same place for a number of years, and pay your rent on time, ask for a good tenant discount. Landlords want to keep good tenants as long as possible.
